You don’t need to travel abroad to have a romantic getaway with your partner. In fact, the UK is packed with stunning locations, memorable attractions and great amenities to make for a fantastic road trip filled with memories. If you’re considering a UK-based road trip, these locations should be on your must-see list.

Sussex

Camber Sands, Sussex, UK

The south coast is a stunning area of the UK that’s filled with beautiful beaches and rolling countryside, as well as charming towns and villages that have a rich heritage to explore. The coastline is ideal for a road trip itinerary. Start off your trip browsing the medieval town of Rye in East Sussex, with its red-topped buildings and quaint pubs and tea rooms, before heading to Fairlight Country Park to take in the sunset. This park spans 640 acres and encompasses ancient woodlands, grasslands and rocky coastlines, along with striking views across the Channel.

For active couples looking to enjoy some healthy competition, why not take part in a coach-led tennis social where you can play with other couples in superb surroundings, after which you can enjoy the spa facilities to relax and unwind. Finish up each day relaxing in a beautiful beach cottage in the likes of Camber Sands or Romney Marsh where you’ll be surrounded by picturesque seascapes and the sound of the waves.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland, UK

When it comes to romantic destinations in the UK, no list would be complete without Edinburgh. The Scottish capital has it all – breathtaking city views, historical landmarks, fantastic options for wining and dining, and nature spots for exploring on foot. From the imposing Edinburgh Castle which sits at the top of the Royal Mile, a tourist favourite, to relaxing on Calton Hill which overlooks Princes Street, you won’t be short of beauty spots in this city.

After taking in the sites, why not enjoy a hike to the top of Arthur’s Seat, an ancient volcano which forms most of Holyrood Park. Combine dinner and your stay with a visit to The Witchery by the Castle, a boutique hotel and restaurant which is a popular spot for visitors to the city. Culture enthusiasts won’t be short of activities here, from the Scottish National Museum to the National Gallery of Modern Art to keep you occupied during your trip.

Bath is one of the UK’s most attractive towns and it’s the ideal romantic spot for couples, whether you’re visiting for a week or just a weekend. It’s as perfect for pampering and relaxing as it is for diving into the history of this area. Bath is known for its Roman Baths which are largely unchanged since they were first built thousands of years ago.

Couples can still partake in the rituals of the area’s ancient bathers and enjoy a thermal bath or take in the cityscape in the rooftop pool. Browse the attractive Royal Crescent which boasts Georgian architecture at every turn and is a key component of the area’s World Heritage status. This historic city is packed with museums and galleries, as well as sites of literary interest, so it’s perfect for couples who enjoy learning more about a destination.

The Peak District

Situated east of Manchester in Derbyshire, The Peak District is an outstanding area in the north-east of England that’s ideal for road trippers. This destination is a great spot for active couples, as it’s packed with hikes, cycle routes, climbs, and caves to explore. Derbyshire is known for its natural beauty, so there’s a wealth of beautiful spots to soak up the fresh air and take in the views during your trip, whether you’re hiking or enjoying your road trip from the comfort of a camper van.

When you’ve enjoyed taking in the beauty of the area, why not stop by some of the Peak District’s many pubs and restaurants where you can enjoy local ales and hearty dishes. This area of the UK is also home to several interesting historic landmarks, such as Chatsworth House and Heage Windmill which dates back to 1797. For a location that’s filled with rustic, unspoiled beauty, there’s nowhere better than this national park.

The largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England and Wales, The Cotswolds is a must-visit spot on any UK road trip. North-east of Bristol, this area has plenty of beautiful and historical areas to explore, and it’s easily reached from London as an added bonus. The charming stone villages should be your first port of call, but there are also the scenic drives from the Broadway Road that deliver some fantastic views through ancient market towns. The Lygon Arms is the perfect rest stop on this route - a traditional inn with plenty of historic charm.

If you’re visiting during the summer, the Snowshill Lavender Farm is a great spot that provides some truly breathtaking scenery, while road trips taken later in the year will benefit from a visit to Westonbirt Arboretum to admire the turning foliage, finished off with a trip to the Cotswolds Distillery for a hot toddy.
