For those who are into startups, entrepreneurship or just thinking about visiting conferences. I’ve made a list of great-to-know-before-going-there points I faced myself and would love to share with you.
Pitching MeetnGreetMe, I have visited many startup conferences in different countries, among them Web Summit, Slush, SXSW, Emerge, and other great events. It’s always such an amazing experience, but looking back to one of our first big pitch at the conference – it was Web Summit in Dublin – I know what has worked great and what I could add to make it even better.
Here are some life hacks you might find useful:
Know your goal
Yes, it’s all about focus. So much is going on around that it’s very important to remember why you are there. Our goal was to find potential partners, customers and expand our network.
Be different
There were a lot of exhibition stands, pretty similar to be honest. We needed attention, a lot of attention. So we decided to engage people by inviting them to play the game and the prize was a 5-liter keg of beer. People loved it!
We naturally turned everyone into our Twitter follower, because Twitter was a place where we announced a winner. After finishing the game they wanted to know more about us and our business.
Business cards
I regret not having my photo there. Perhaps it’s not appropriate to have your face on all business cards, for such events as huge conferences it really works. I did my best to write down some things about the business card holder, but at the end of the day all business cards looked the same and only those with faces helped me to recall the story behind the business card.
Pitching: 30 sec, 1 minute and the long story is a must have
Almost every time everything started with the question “Tell us about your business”. Several times people asked to give a short interview with just 20 seconds to get prepared for it.
Smile
People preferred to approach those who look welcome. I think it’s correct regarding life in general.
Arrange meetings with people using the application you are provided by the event organizer
At the beginning of the private message, mention how much you like their service and then offer to meet because you need advice on this and that. People who attend such conferences are usually open to sharing their experience.
CamCard
I suggest that you install this app, because it helps you to keep all business cards in one place with three easy steps: scan, correct, save smile emoticon
Pitching your idea at a conference is an amazing opportunity to gather feedback, get and give some advice and fall in love with your idea a little bit more every time you pitch.
